Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease—strikes some 20,000 Americans at any given time. Progressively destroying motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, this debilitating neurological condition eventually robs patients of their ability to speak, swallow, and move.
While no cure yet exists for ALS, there is life after diagnosis. Maintaining independence and maximizing ability for as long as possible requires an integrated multispecialty approach. Uniquely addressing the many physical, emotional and financial issues ALS patients and their families face, NorthShore recently launched its first multidisciplinary ALS Clinic serving the northern suburbs. Sponsored by the ALS United (Greater Chicago), our full-service clinic offers a personalized coordinated care experience all in one convenient location.
The ALS Clinic features a wide array of healthcare professionals experienced in helping enhance the quality of life and comfort of individuals with ALS. Our team includes neurologists; occupational, physical and speech therapists; social workers; and nutritionists. A dedicated neurology nurse specialist and a home care representative from the ALS Association are also available.
