At NorthShore, we provide several imaging options to accurately examine abnormalities within the vascular system with minimally invasive methods. CT and/or MR arteriography and venography are methods of obtaining images of the arteries and veins which can then be examined by interventional radiologists to assist in the diagnosis of vascular pathology. These minimally invasive imaging techniques may eliminate the need for catheter directed invasive procedures, are painless and are relatively safe, allowing patients to leave the hospital right after the scan is completed.
Minimally Invasive Vascular Imaging Symptoms and Diagnosis
Vascular conditions can be caused by issues such as plaque buildup, blood clots, weakened arteries, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Depending on the condition, the symptoms can vary, oftentimes appearing as:
- Pain or weakness in the affected area
- Swelling, tenderness or discoloration of the skin
- Visible veins
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Changes in blood pressure or heart rate
- Pain while in bed at night
- Pain in calves, thighs or buttocks when walking
Your primary care or referring physician will begin the diagnosis of your vascular condition with a physical exam, and then request imaging to get a closer look at the affected veins and blood vessels.
Treatment Options using Minimally Invasive Vascular Imaging
Minimally invasive vascular imaging can be used to diagnose several abnormalities within the vascular system including:
The imaging techniques we use serve as alternatives to procedures like an angiogram, in which a catheter would need to be inserted into an artery or vein. Our minimally invasive approach will have you in and out in a short period of time, and sometimes does not require the use of contrast dye. With a multidisciplinary approach to care, our interventional radiologists will communicate with your physician to determine which imaging will be best in diagnosing your symptoms.
Our interventional radiology team uses advanced techniques using minimally invasive vascular imaging including:
