The Health Psychology/Behavioral Medicine Program focuses on the promotion and maintenance of health, as well as the prevention and treatment of illness. The clinical emphasis of this program involves diagnosis and treatment of persons who:
- Suffer a physical disorder that is exacerbated or caused by psychological factors
- Have physical disorders that create psychological symptoms
- Experience psychological reactions to illness or accidents
- Maintain high-risk behaviors that may result in illness and disability (i.e., weight control, smoking and noncompliance with medical regimens)
Areas of Involvement
Medical areas of involvement include referrals from oncology, neurology, urology, internal medicine, surgery, rehabilitation medicine, cardiology, dentistry, geriatrics, pediatrics, gynecology, and family medicine.
Problem areas often include emotional responses to illness/disability, developing coping skills in response to illness/disability, adherence to medial regimen, pain management and preparation for stressful medical procedures.
