Located at our NorthShore and Swedish Hospitals in Evanston and Chicago, IL, we offer a comprehensive framework so that our residents emerge as competent and compassionate psychiatrists.
- Academic affiliation: Our program is sponsored by our academic partner, the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, in which you’ll be immersed in a mix of clinical experiences and career-building learning opportunities.
- Wide exposure to sub-specialties: You’ll benefit from an all-encompassing curriculum across Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry and Emergency Psychiatry.

- Innovative opportunities: The Neuromodulation service, providing cutting-edge treatments like electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), and Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS), is a highlight for those interested in advanced therapeutic techniques.
Our program is currently pursuing accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for four years of postgraduate training, hosting four residents per year, for a total of 16 residents. We emphasize a balanced approach to psychiatric education, engaging residents with a curriculum that incorporates the ACGME’s six core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

The inpatient psychiatry experience at NorthShore and Swedish Hospitals is diverse and comprehensive, providing psychiatric training within medical and surgical services. Residents will gain valuable experience managing a wide range of psychiatric disorders in settings such as Highland Park Hospital’s 20-bed adolescent and young adult unit and Swedish Hospital’s 35-bed adult unit. The multidisciplinary treatment approach includes psychopharmacology, individual and family therapy, and specialized interventions like creative arts, recreational, and occupational therapy.
Additionally, ambulatory psychiatric training includes collaborative care, child and adolescent psychiatry, community psychiatry and intensive emergency psychiatry. Unique opportunities such as our Psychiatric Urgent Care Center, Neuromodulation service and Women’s Mental Health program offer advanced therapeutic techniques and specialized care, enriching the residency experience.
