Practica Description: The Health Psychology Service at NorthShore University HealthSystem is offering training practica in health psychology for the 2024-2025 academic year. Externs may choose from various clinical rotations, including pediatric health psychology, adult bariatric surgery and weight loss management, adult pain management, adult psycho-oncology, and acute concussion. If interested, externs may also gain experience in pre-surgical psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery and DRG/SCS implantation as part of the bariatric and pain management rotations, respectively. As part of all rotations, students will be trained in formal short-term, goal-oriented evidence based treatments, receive formal didactic training, and will obtain extensive experience in clinical assessment and note writing. Students may also have an opportunity to run skills-based groups.
Supervision: In addition to at least two hours of structured individual supervision each week, students receive considerable informal individual supervision, as well as bimonthly group supervision.
Didactics: Our practicum students can choose from a variety of Departmental Grand Rounds to attend and the Health Psychology Case Conference. Attendance is mandatory.
Time Commitment: Students are expected to engage at practicum approximately 16-20 hours per week, usually over 2 to 3 days. This could be a combination of both telehealth and in-person work.

The diversity of special interests and training represented among our health psychologists allows our program to provide services to the full range of clinical disorders among both children and adults.
Location: Training opportunities are available at several of our outpatient locations. The didactics opportunities described are available at Evanston Hospital and via Zoom. Many of our locations are easily accessible by train. Free parking is provided for students who prefer to drive.
Application Procedures: Interested students are expected to have completed classwork and (preferably, but not necessarily) prior practicum training in health psychology.
