No one goes through life without feeling anxious from time to time. In most respects, anxiety is a useful emotion that alerts us to potentially dangerous situations and mobilizes us to act to protect ourselves from harm. However, when simple worries or brief anxieties grow out of proportion to the situations that trigger them, or become more frequent, intense, or begin to interfere with healthy functioning, one must consider that an anxiety problem has developed. There are six basic anxiety disorders, and while each disorder has its own distinct features, they are all marked by excessive anxiety and fear.
More than 19 million Americans suffer from some type of anxiety disorder, but a small portion of those people ever seek treatment despite the fact that effective anxiety treatments exists. That means there is a lot of unnecessary suffering going on.
